He had lived here most of his life, coming to Columbia 18 years ago. In Mayesville he was engaged in the retail business and had one of the largest businesses in Sumter County. He served as mayor of Mayesville for many years, being elected to that office before he reached the age of 21. He also served on the school board and was a director in the Mayesville bank. He had been active in church and civic work both in Mayesville and in this city (Columbia, South Carolina). After moving to Columbia, Mr. DesChamps went into the real estate buiness.
