BEATSON Posted Tuesday, September 26, 2023 6:00 am FAIRFAX, Virginia - On Saturday, Sept. 16, 2023, retired Lt. Col. Ronald B. Beatson, loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle passed away at the age of 78, after battling Alzheimer's disease. Ron was born on Jan. 25, 1945, in Sumter, to the late Halvor and Tressie Beatson. In 1963, Ron was a graduate of Clemson University. He was a proud member of the Clemson Corps of Cadets and the Reserve Officers' Training Corps. Lt. Col. Beatson's distinguished career with the U.S. Army commenced with his service during the Vietnam War in March 1968 and concluded with his retirement while supporting the Office of the Surgeon General in May 1991. He was privileged to serve as an infantryman, a medical operations officer and the commander of the 21st Combat Support Hospital. For his acts of heroism and extraordinary achievement during his military career, Lt. Col. Beatson was awarded the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star, Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross Unit Citation, Combat Medical Badge and several other Meritorious Service and Commendation medals. Upon returning from Vietnam, Ron met and married the love of his life, Betty Louise Monshaw Beatson. Ron and Betty spent the next 20 years crisscrossing the world, living at numerous duty stations. While stationed in Germany in the early 1970's, Ron and Betty had two sons, Bryan and Scott. Ron made it his life's mission to support his sons, providing them with a North Star to follow while teaching them life's most important values: friendship, family, integrity, honesty and hard work. He received a Master of Arts degree from Webster College and completed the U.S. Army General Staff College. After military retirement, Ron spent time working at SRA and the Southwest Research Institute supporting the Army Medical Service Corps. Ron's favorite role was that of "Pop-Pop" to his two grandchildren, Liam (17) and Solomon (16). He never missed the chance to support their adventures and accomplishments and was a steady presence in their lives, always desiring to be "present." He was so proud of them. Ron is survived by Betty, his wife of more than 52 years; his sister, Sara Nell Hall of Sumter; his two sons, Bryan and Scott and their spouses, Amy and Kristen; and two wonderful grandchildren, Liam and "Solly." Please consider donations in his memory to the Alzheimer' Foundation or the Wounded Warrior Project. Funeral services will be held at a later date.
