| HIST | of Sumter, South Carolina DONALD RHETT SHULER Posted Saturday, March 29, 2025 9:40 pm Donald Rhett Shuler, 82, widower of Mary Frances “Susie” Tomlinson Shuler, passed away peacefully Friday, March 28, 2025, at Prisma Health Tuomey. Born Feb. 24, 1943, in Elloree, he was the son of the late Otis Norman Shuler and Mildred Lee Felkel Shuler. His childhood quickly turned to adulthood, when his father passed away suddenly, when he was 12 years old. Don quickly assumed responsibility, helping his mother provide for their family and raising his two younger sisters, Dianne and Mary Hope. He graduated from Holly Hill High School in 1961. He went on to complete his associate degree in civil engineering and HVAC at Sumter Area Technical College, where he went on to serve as associate professor of HVAC. He retired as head of the Engineering Department at Shaw Air Force Base in 1991. He was a charter member of Crosspoint Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon and sang in the choir. He also attended Graham Baptist Church. Don served in the Army National Guard. He was a member of Jamil Shriners and was an anchor in the Billy Brogdon Country Club. Following his retirement, “Big Don,” as he was known by many, enjoyed camping, fishing, hosting annual Thanksgiving BBQs, Clemson football, NASCAR and especially spoiling his grandchildren, who meant the world to him, even if it meant doing their science projects. Big Don was well known for being able to fix, build or Macgyver anything, including his log cabin that he built by hand 40 years ago. To know Don, Daddy, PaPa, Papoo, Big Don or Uncle D was to love him. Survivors include two daughters, Pam Shuler Bell (Mac) and Paige Shuler Hawkey (Tom); five grandchildren, Donald Ryan Bell, Eric Charles Bell, Samuel Harrison Bell, Thomas Rhett Howell and Mary Hannah Hoover; one sister, Mary Hope Fields (Harry); two special brothers-in-law, Butch Tomlinson (Nelle) and Leon Powers; special friend, Donald Gaddy; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife of 50 years and parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Dianne Shuler Powers. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 1, 2025, in the Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home Chapel officiated by the Rev. John Patrick. Burial will be in the Island Cemetery in the Providence Community of Orangeburg County. Pallbearers will be his grandsons, Donald Ryan Bell, Eric Charles Bell, Samuel Harrison Bell and Thomas Rhett Howell, and nephews, Tripp McElveen, Matt Fields and Eddie Tomlinson. The family will receive friends from 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday, March 30, 2025, at the home, 3530 Boots Branch Road, and from 1 to 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 1, 2025, at Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home. The family would like to express their appreciation to Dr. Robert Bullard and the entire team at Prisma Health Tuomey for the compassionate care they provided to Don and his family during his final days. Memorials may be sent to the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America, 322 8th Avenue, 16th Floor, New York, NY 10001. Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and Crematorium of Sumter is in charge of the arrangements. [1, 4] | |
