Self, 87, husband of Nina Scurry Miles-Self, died Monday, June 28, 2010, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born June 24, 1923, in Kershaw County, he was a son of the late Willie C. and Nannie Viola Hall Self. Mr. Self was a member of Sumter Baptist Temple. He was the owner of Self Livestock and Seven Oaks Riding Stables from 1950 to 1980. He was a past member of the Appaloosa Horse Association, the American Quarter Horse Association and the S.C. Cattlemen's Association. Mr. Self was certified by the State of South Carolina Auctioneers Commission and was an auctioneer for more than 50 years. Mr. Self's horses won a number of awards, the S.C. Appaloosa Horse Association Show in 1968, 1969, 1970, 1972 and 1973; the Pinewood Lion's Club Horse Show in 1973 and 1978; and the Arkansas State Fair Appaloosa Show in 1979. Survivors include his wife; a brother, Thomas W. Self of Oroville, Calif.; a sister, Cornelia Self Torre of Columbia; a special nephew, William Marion Morrison (Joyce) of Charlotte; three stepchildren, Chris Feutral (Chuck) of Augusta, Ga., Keith "Buddy" Osborne (Regina) of Sumter and Todd S. Osborne (Lori) of Sarasota, Fla.; grandchildren, Lee and Courtney Barnes, and Holly and Ryan Walden, all of Augusta, K.C. and Susanne Osborne, Skyler Osborne and Dillon Osborne, all of Sumter, and Laura and Emily Osborne, both of Sarasota, Fla.; and eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Elizabeth Miles Self; and a number of lifetime friends, Ernest J. Newman, George Stamey, Sheriff I. Byrd Parnell, Hargrove Montgomery, Reuben Shorter, Clayton Lowder Sr., H.Q. Jones; and actors, Sunset Carson and Iron Eyes Cody. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Sumter Baptist Temple with Pastor Eddie Richardson officiating. Private burial will be in Crescent Hill Memorial Park in Columbia. Pallbearers will be Dr. Michael A. McGinnis, Robert Haynie, Charles Bostic Jr., Bill McLaughlin, Steve Lowder, Hazel Budden, Eugene T. Spann and Willie "Robert" Cabbagestalk. Honorary pallbearers will be the deacons of Sumter Baptist Temple. The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. today at Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and other times at the home.
