Body found of man shot by estranged wife - The body of a Sumter man shot by his estranged wife after he had broken into her home in the eastern section of the city on the evening of Thursday, Sept. 20, was found with a bullet wound in his stomach the following day in a wooded area near the residence at the corner of Hauser and Dunway Drive. He was identified as Elliott Lee Bonnette, 35. According to Mrs. Bonnette, she fired at her husband when he broke into her home, striking him in the stomach. She said he took the gun from her and fired one shot before staggering from the house after Mrs. Bonnette's stepfather, Ted Bradley, who had arrived to help his stepdaughter, grabbed the gun. A search was undertaken after Sheriff Byrd Parnell and deputies along with city police arrived to investigate the shooting. Joining in the search were county prisoners. Failing to find Bonnette during the night, the search was resumed the following morning and continued until the afternoon when Bonnette's body was found. Coroner Guignard DuBose was expected to hold an inquest into the fatal shooting. [1, 3] |
