| HIST | of Sumter, South Carolina THOMAS A. ATKINSON JR. Posted Sunday, September 24, 2017 6:00 am Thomas Allen Atkinson Jr., 68, husband of Peggy Jones Atkinson, died on Friday, Sept. 22, 2017, at a local nursing facility after a short illness. Born on March 2, 1949, in Sumter, he was a son of the late Thomas A. and the late Willie Mae Barfield Atkinson Sr. He attended Sumter County Schools and Midlands Technical College. Allen was a long-time member of Grace Baptist Church where he was an active member of the choir and Sunday School. He is survived by his wife of 46 years; one son, Keith E. Atkinson and his wife Laura of Lexington; three grandchildren, Kayla, Hannah and Johnathon Atkinson; one brother, Michael Atkinson and his wife Sherry of Summerville; and a number of nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Clifton Barfield Atkinson. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday at Grace Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Steve Williams officiating. Burial will be in Wells Cemetery. Pallbearers will be his nephews and cousins. The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. on Monday in the parlor at Grace Baptist Church and other times at the home, 15 Saratoga St. The family would like to express their appreciation to the Oncology Department at Palmetto Health-Tuomey and the staff of Sumter Health and Rehabilitation, especially Sally and Amanda, for the care they all provided during this time.
