CARL R. TOBIAS
Carl R. Tobias, 90, widower of Betty Geraldine Kennedy Tobias, died Saturday, Dec. 26, 2009, at Clarendon Memorial Hospital in Manning.
Born in Sumter County, he was a son of the late Joe W. and Annie Elise Jones Tobias. Mr. Tobias was a member of Midway Baptist Church. He retired from McCollum Motors after 42 years and owned and operated Carl's Texaco on Main Street. He also served in the U.S. Marines.
Survivors include a son, the Rev. C. Raymond Tobias Jr. (Delores) of Sumter; a daughter, Betty Jane Bradley (Richard) of Sumter; eight grandchildren, Carl Raymond Tobias III, Thomas Eugene Tobias, Amanda Renee Mahaffey, Melissa Diane Davis, Sharon Poplin, Jody Mitchum, Charles Mitchum and Lisa Bellamey; eight great-grandchildren; a brother, Leon A. Tobias of Alcolu; and a sister; Shirley Bullock of Sumter.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Kenneth Tobias and Billy Tobias; and two sisters, Pearl Bell and Ruby Bochette.
Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Sumter Cemetery with the Rev. Raymond Tobias officiating.
Pallbearers will be Joe Brogdon, George Brogdon, Britt Mahaffey, Jimmy Davis, Gene Bradley and Eddie Kennedy.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home.
