| HIST | John Wesley Singleton An Ode to John 10th Mtn Medical Battalion July 4, 2012 Now your flag is waving In the cool and crispy air The reason for your service In the war of yester-year. It was given to me at your funeral It covered your resting place However I could not touch it For the reverence of your fate. From the boat of the Alps in Italy To the gap at Brenner Pass Was your foxhole sleeping place Til the night of the final blast. The item of your comfort Was the blanket in which to wrap However it did not counter The cold of the below zero draft. You prayed, gave thanks for living Also for your family back home For your buddies more zealously To keep them from awful harm. You received the wounded soldiers Wreaking in pain and blood Gave them a shot of morphine And wrapped it tight as a glove. You gave your youngest years Amazed at what you saw Brought home The Purple Heart A Bronze and Two Battle Stars. Not only do I have the medals Representing your courageous fight I have the picture of The Red Cross On top of your helmet at night. Fly on American Flag You must be honorably kept This generation must realize All wars are not over yet. Edith A. Singleton (Your wife) [5] | |
