  HIST	of Sumter, South Carolina Bertha Mae Singleton Bertha Mae Wilkes Singleton was born Oct. 19, 1919, in Thicketty, to the late Robert and Anna Wilkes. She departed this life on Oct. 31, 2013, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. She was educated in the public schools of Philadelphia. She was raised by her grandmother, the late Matilda Robinson, until she relocated to Sumter to live with her cousin, the late Mattie McBride. In Sumter, she met and married the late Hazel Singleton Sr. Bertha was a devout Christian woman. She was a member of St. Mark United Methodist Church and was the mother of the church. She served on the usher board, the historical society, prayer band, amen corner, United Methodist Women, communion servers and the golden age group. She truly loved her St. Mark Church family and rarely missed attending Sunday service. Survivors are her children, Shirley Blanding of Brooklyn, N.Y., Willie (Jeanette) Singleton of Sumter, Deloris Singleton of Sumter, James (Dorothy) Singleton of Queens Village, N.Y., Clarence (Mary Jean) Singleton of Midlothian, Va., and Ruby Singleton Blakeney of Annapolis, Md.; three grandchildren that she raised, Brenda (Rossi) Ramsey, Patricia Singleton and Earl Blanding Jr.; 35 other grandchildren; 56 great-grandchildren; 20 great-great-grandchildren; two great-great-great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends. Public viewing will be held from 2 to 7 p.m. today at Job’s Mortuary. The body will be placed in the church at noon Thursday for viewing until the hour of service. Funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at St. Mark United Methodist Church, Sumter, with the Rev. Geneva Stafford officiating. Interment will follow in St. Mark UM Cemetery.
