| HIST | a member of the Summerton American Legion and Summerton Lions Club at death- he had a granddaughter, Mary Virginia Ardis Pack, Gordon retain their Manning council seats By Robert J. Baker bbaker@theitem.com Nothing changed in the makeup of Manning City Council on Tuesday as voters in districts 1 and 4 went to the polls. Clayton Pack, 47, and Johnny Gordon Jr., 58, were re-elected to their respective seats - 1 and 4 - with comfortable margins, with Pack holding off challenger Effie Hilton, 55, with 108 votes to 59. "I am just relieved," said Pack shortly after the win for his third four-year term on council was announced at the Clarendon County Sheriff's Department. "I'm ready to get back to work to continue to make Manning a better place for all its citizens to live." A newcomer to politics, Hilton congratulated Pack on his win. "You did a good job," she said. "I hope I can be of help." Gordon won his seat back with 46 votes over challenger Verniod "Carlo" Goodine's 9. "I feel very good about having another four years to work for the citizens of Manning," said Gordon, who has served on council since 1992. About 11 miles southwest in the small town of Summerton, about 130 voters turned out to give Town Council members Ellen Ardis and Ritchie Way their third and second four-year terms, respectively. Ardis, whose father Thomas once served as the town's mayor in the 1970s, served on the council from 1976-1980 and then ran again successfully in 2004. "I think we have a good group that gets along well," Ardis said. "We may disagree, but we don't fuss and fight. We all want what's best for the town of Summerton." But for the second time in two years, Henry Lawson will not be rejoining that group. The 82-year-old was edged out just five votes by Loretta Pollard, 70, a New York City native who has lived in Summerton for 17 years. Pollard took 81 votes to Lawson's 76, while Ardis topped the four candidates with 125. Way received 117, and Tony Atkinson received three write-in votes. In 2010, Lawson lost a seat on the council that he had held for 12 years to then-newcomer Terrance Tindal. He ran again in September unopposed for the seat vacated by Seth Stewart, who resigned to attend graduate school in another city. Neither Pollard nor Lawson could be reached for comment Tuesday night after results were announced, but Pollard said before the election that she wants to do more in her retirement. "I just feel like I have more to give," she said. "I have been on the (Clarendon School District 1) board, and I've served with the Silver-Haired Legislature. I love Summerton and consider it a wonderful place to make my home. I want to do something to make it better for everyone. I want more people to feel the way I do about this town I love." Lawson, too, said before the election that he would always be concerned with "the business of Summerton." "I would never go far from it," he said. "I will always involve myself in making Summerton a better place." Reach Robert J. Baker at (803) 435-8511. Posted in Local news, News on Wednesday, April 4, 2012 [2, 3] | |
