Posted in Obits on Thursday, May 27, 2004 Rogerson's keeps Sumter cars running straight JIM HILLEY / THE SUMTER ITEM Joey and Burrell Rogerson have been doing alignments and front-end work in the shop on Broad Street for decades. John Ed Rogerson opened the shop in 1954, and his two sons now run it. Posted Saturday, April 9, 2016 6:00 am BY JIM HILLEY JIM@THEITEM.COM When John Ed Rogerson opened his auto repair shop in 1954, it probably was not unusual for customers to bring in DeSotos, Hudsons, Nashes and Packards. A lot has happened in the auto industry since then, but Rogerson's Front End Service, 832 Broad St., is still in business, now run by the original owner's two sons: Burrell and Joey Rogerson. John Ed Rogerson retired in 1979, but he passed on his knowledge and skill to his boys. "We started working when we were in elementary school," Joey Rogerson said. Burrell Rogerson said his father moved to Sumter from Georgetown County in 1928. The current building was built in 1980 on the same location as the first shop, he said. "Wise Drive was not paved and didn't go past a few houses," he said. Burrell Rogerson said his dad did brake and front-end work, and that is what they have specialized in through the business' 62 years. "We don't try to do it all," he said. He said the secret to staying in business all of those years is treating customers right. "Daddy has a saying that kind of stuck with me," he said. "'If you get too busy, and you don't do it right, how are you going to find the time to do it again?'" He said a lot of their business is return customers, but they also depend on working for other businesses. "It's not something you do every few months, like an oil change, so a lot of our work is for body shops and dealers. Cars get into wrecks and stuff and need alignment work." Burrell Rogerson said he was born and raised in Sumter, attended Edmunds High School and received a bachelor's degree in management from Clemson University. "Just the fact that you had to apply yourself and get a degree is worth it," he said. Joey Rogerson said he worked at the Westinghouse plant in Sumter for a few years before coming back to the family business. Across the street from Rogerson's Front End is Robertson Auto Service. Do people get the two confused? "We don't, but other people do," Burrell Rogerson said, laughing. He said the shop across the street does general repair and not alignments and front ends. "We only overlap in brakes," he said. "We have had a good relationship; sometimes they send us work, and sometimes we send them work." Burrell Rogerson said he will be 65 in few months and will consider retiring in a year or two. When he and his brother hang up the wrenches, Burrell Rogerson said, there isn't another generation waiting in the wings to take over. Burrell said Joey has a son, but his brother discouraged him from following in their footsteps. "He threatened him if he ever picked up a wrench," he said. "It's hard work." Everything has to be done using computers on the newer vehicles, Burrell Rogerson said. "They are trying to get the computers to do all the thinking and the people to do all the work," Burrell Rogerson said. Rogerson's Front End is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and open from 8 a.m. to noon on Fridays. For more information, call (803) 773-3840. [1, 3, 4, 7] | |
