Christmas loves job as secretary for the Sumter Fire Department. She says she wishes she started working for them 20 years ago instead of two. Some people look forward to Fridays. Mona B. Christmas looks forward to Mondays. She adores her secretarial job with the Sumter Fire Department and says she wishes she had come to work for them 20 years ago, instead of two, when she left the personnel department. The firefighters love her, too. During Christmas’ interview with The Item on Friday, few resisted a good ribbing. “She loves to talk,” said one. “Loudly,” added another. “We call her our secondary emergency broadcast system.” Apparently, truth is stranger than fiction. Once, the nearby Piggly-Wiggly store called and asked if the fire department could turn down its PA system — which Christmas mans. “I guess I am a little loud,” she laughed. “But you have to be, with these guys!” Fortunately, it’s all in good fun for Christmas, a Sumter native and longtime city employee who has three children, ages 19, 15 and 8, and who has been married to her husband, Ken, since 1987.
