Wilhelmina "Billie" Weldon Porcher MT. PLEASANT - Mrs. Wilhelmina (Billie) Weldon Porcher, 98, widow of Philip Gendron Porcher, died Saturday, September 26, 2009. She was born in St. Charles, South Carolina, the daughter of Ariel Koga Weldon and Daisie Scott Weldon on May 20, 1911. She was the fourth of nine children and she was the last living sibling. Married to Philip G. Porcher for fifty years, she has been a widow for 29 years. She was a cherished wife, devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, a teacher, a friend, a care giver, and a volunteer. A graduate of Montreat College in North Carolina, she was that school's oldest living alumna. Primarily a homemaker, she was active with her children's schools. For her many years of service she was made a lifetime member of South Carolina Parent Teacher Association. For ten years, she was employed by the Diocese of South Carolina. In 1963, she was honored as South Carolina's Mother of the Year. For 78 years, she was a member of Christ Episcopal Church, and she devoted much of her life to this church and its activities: the Sunday school, the Altar Guild, the Women of the Church, Daughters of the King, Tea Room committee, Young Peoples' Service League, and office volunteer. She served on the Diocesan Episcopal Church Women's board in many capacities and was a delegate to the National Women's Triennial Convention. She gave many volunteer hours to her community: visiting friends, shut-ins, nursing home residents, driving for Meals on Wheels, helping with a weekly communion service at Sandpiper Convalescent Center, and at the desk of East Cooper Community Hospital. In addition to her passion for her Lord, the Church, her family, and her community, she loved to travel, making trips to Alaska, Hawaii, Scandinavia, Europe, China, Japan, Israel, and Canada. She especially enjoyed traveling to many points in the United States with Top of the Line Tours. She was an avid bridge prayer and cherished the friendships of her foursomes. The family is grateful both to the staff at Sandpiper Countyard for their years of dedication to helping her maintain her independence as long as possible and to the staff at Keil Center at Franke Home for their diligent, loving care in her declining months. She is survived by three sons, Philip G. Porcher (Georgia Ann), Francis C. Porcher (Judy), John L. Porcher (Frances), one daughter, Daisy P. Stoudenmire, all of Mt. Pleasant, and one daughter-in-law, Phyllis B. Porcher of Kitty Hawk, NC, fifteen grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren. She is also survived by one sister-in-law, Jean M. Weldon of Columbia, SC and numerous nieces and nephews. The friends and family of Billie Porcher are invited to attend her funeral at Christ Episcopal Church, Hwy, 17, at Longpoint Road, Mt. Pleasant on Tuesday, September 29, 2009 at eleven o'clock. Burial will follow immediately in Christ Church Cemetery.
