" My Dad and Uncle Grady, as well as Uncle Benny (Watts) and a number of other men from around Sumter (SC), moved to Florence in the early 20's and went to work for the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad. Uncle John, Dolly Stone's husband, opened a store instead of going to the Railroad. Uncle Benny was Ruby Stone's husband. Railroad men were on strike and (the Railroad) was hiring new men to break the strike. The Railroad was successful, too. Unlce Grady ran a big grocery store in Florence. He also bought property in Florence. I worked for him for $2.50 per week". (Dayton B. Stone, Jr.)
