COLEMAN LYNCHBURG -- Elbert C. Coleman, 79, died Thursday, Feb. 5, 2009, after an illness. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. today at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church with burial in Friendship Cemetery, directed by Floyd Funeral Home of Olanta. Visitation will be at the family's home, 2905 Shiloh Raccoon Road, Lynchburg. Born in Sumter County, he was a son of the late Jiles D. and Ida Mae Logan Coleman. Mr. Coleman was a captain of Station No. 4, Pleasant Grove Fire Department, where he served actively for 48 years. He was also a member of Woodmen of the World, a member of the Masonic Lodge No. 394, a retired farmer and a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Kathy Coleman; a sister, Ethel Coleman; and two grandchildren, Joey Altman and Andy Coleman. Surviving are his wife of 58 years, Carolyn Lee Coleman of the home; two daughters, Mae (J.W.) Altman and Wendy (John) Sharp of Lynchburg; three sons, Jay (Cindy) Coleman of Florence, Ted (Betty) Coleman and J.D. (Laura) Coleman of Lynchburg; two sisters, Kathleen Wilson of Scriven, Ga., and Annette Coker of Lynchburg; a brother, John (Liz) Coleman of Lynchburg; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a number of nieces and nephews.
