Harris Jr. James Carl Harris Jr., 87, died Friday, March 9, 2012, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born in Sumter, he was a son of the late James Carl Sr. and Zena Mai Ashworth Harris. Mr. Harris was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran of World War II. He was retired from Sumter County Public Works. He was a member of Green Acres Assembly of God. He was a lifetime member of the Marine Corps League. He was an avid fisherman and sports enthusiast. He was an honorary citizen of Boys Town. Survivors include a daughter, Barbara H. Baker (Buddy) of Sumter; a son, James Edward Harris (Dee) of Louisburg, N.C.; two grandchildren, Joey Baker and Kathy Lambert (Richard), all of Sumter; a sister, Dorothy H. Lighthill of Sumter; two great-granddaughters, Ashley Smith and Erin Baker; two great-grandsons, Joseph Smith and A.J. Smith; two step-great-grandchildren,Richie and Miranda Lambert; several nieces and nephews; and special and dear friends, Bill Hartley, Joe Smith, and David Watford. He was preceded in death by a sister, Iris Brown; and a brother-in-law, Jack Lighthill. Graveside services will be will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday at the Green Acres Cemetery with the Rev. Donnie Collins officiating. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and other times at the home of his granddaughter, Kathy Lambert, 33 Lindley Ave. Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and Crematorium of Sumter is in charge of the arrangements.
