LONNIE M. SMITH
Lonnie Mondell Smith, 87, widower of Mary Alsbrook Smith, died Saturday, June 6, 2009 at home.
Born in Smoaks, he was a son of the late Allie O. Smith and Mae Ramsey Smith.
Mr. Smith was a member of Grace Baptist Church and graduated from Smoaks High School in 1938. He moved to Charleston in 1940 and began his civil career in 1941 at the Charleston Navy Yard. He retired in 1982 after 42 years of service. He served four years in the U.S. Navy in WWII and Korea. He married Mary Alsbrook in 1956 in Charleston where they lived until moving to Sumter in 1992. He was a member of the Franklin Masonic Lodge in Charleston.
Surviving are three nieces and one nephew, all of Charleston
He was predeceased by a brother, A. Ray Smith and a sister, Connie Smith Bolyn.
Graveside Services will be held at noon Monday in the Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery with Dr. James Chandler officiating.
