She was born Oct. 15, 1915, in Sumter, a daughter of the late Samuel Watson Gillespie and Charlotte Bainbridge Cobb Gillespie. She was predeceased by her first husband, James Bland Mellette; her second husband, Stanley Fletcher Morse; her brother, Samuel Watson Gillespie Jr.; and her sister, Charlotte Bainbridge Gillespie. She is survived by her son, James Bland Mellette Jr. and his wife, Connie Owen Mellette, of Irmo; her daughter, Carolyn Erskine Gillespie Mellette Edwards of Charlotte, N.C.; four grandchildren, James Bland Mellette III, Carolyn Erskine Mellette Edwards, U.S. Army Capt. Nancy Mellette Clauss and U.S. Coast Guard Lt. Catherine Mellette; five great-grandchildren; and her sister, Margaret Ella Gillespie Ecker Strelsky of Atlanta. She grew up on Claremont, her family's cotton plantation near Stateburg, which defined her love of the land, nature and animals. She maintained her membership in the Episcopal Church of the Holy Cross, Stateburg, and the Stateburg Literary and Musical Society. She lived in Sumter, Irmo and on Wadmalaw Island. She loved travel and did so extensively, both abroad and in the U.S., sometimes wintering in Mexico or Peru. She enjoyed learning and frequented the library researching subjects that interested her. She took continuing education classes at the University of South Carolina in anthropology and art even into her 80s. She had a special love of art and enjoyed painting. A visitation will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Dunbar Funeral Home, Dutch Fork Chapel, Irmo. Service according to the rites of the Episcopal Church will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at the Church of the Holy Cross, Stateburg, located near Sumter, with interment in the family plot there.
