| HIST | of Sumter, South Carolina Columbia- Former Sumter County Master-In-Equity, he was reprimanded by the state Supreme Court on Monday for borrowing more than $20,000 from an office bank account. • The court said that Evans borrowed the money over a two-year period, using some of the money for personal expenses and also making loans. He has not paid back about $3,000, according to the court. • He resigned as Master-in-Equity in June of last years after being suspended by the state Judicial Department while one of his employees was investigated for embezzlement. Shirley Holloman later pleaded guilty to embezzling more than $600,000 from the Master-In-Equity Office and was sentenced to a year in prison, five years probation and $150,000 in restitution. Holloman pleaded guilty to writing 88 checks to herself totaling $623,279 during a three-year period. • According to the court, Evans wrote checks of $10,000 to himself from the Master-In-Equity account in January and February of 2000, later returning the money. In 1998, the court says, Evans made loans of $4,000 and $3,500 from the account to an individual, with the funds later repaid with interest. In January 2000, the court states, an “advance” of $3,000 was made to the same individual. That money has not been replaced. • Evans, the court concluded, “shall neither seek nor accept any judicial office in this State without the express written permission of the Court after due notice in writing to ODC (Office of Disciplinary Counsel).” • Attorney Richard L. Booth has served as interim Master-In-Equity since Evans’ resignation. Linwood S. Evans Jr. Linwood S. Evans, Jr. SUMTER, SC - Linwood Spencer Evans, Jr., 67, husband of Alice Holland Evans, died Friday, August 6, 2010, at the Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Born in Rock Hill, SC, he was a son of the late Linwood Spencer Evans, Sr. and Helen Murchison Evans. Mr. Evans was a retired Sumter County Master-In-Equity Judge and was an advocate of the American Disabilities Act. Surviving are his wife of Wedgefield; one son, Jack Linwood Evans of Millbrook, AL; one daughter, Lisa Rae Evans of Lexington; two step-sons, Ricky Mizell of Sumter and Benjamin Brown and wife Joyce of Sumter; one step-daughter, Dee Dee Davis and husband Gary of Springfield, SC; one brother, Cameron Evans and wife Juley of Charleston; numerous grandchildren; and a very special friend, Roy Morgan. He was preceded in death by a brother, John McIver Evans. Graveside services will be held at 11 A.M. Monday at the Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery with Rev. Greg Pressley officiating. The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 P.M. Sunday at the Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home and other times at the home.
