| HIST | Fundraiser for Sumter brothers serves more than 500 plates, raises $5K for medical bills Volunteers prepare, pack and deliver plates during the BBQ Chicken Plate Fundraiser for brothers Jayden and Brycen Catoe. ALAYSHA MAPLE / THE SUMTER ITEM Posted Tuesday, April 12, 2022 6:00 am BY ALAYSHA MAPLE alaysha@theitem.com Friends and family of the Catoe brothers shared love, laughter and a delicious meal with the Sumter community at their barbecue fundraiser Saturday. The smell of delicious food filled the kitchen at Northside Memorial Baptist Church, 1004 N. Main St., Saturday morning as family and friends of the Catoe family prepared 500 to-go plates of chicken, rice, string beans and desserts. At noon, hundreds drove up to show their support after the tragic incident that shook the family last October. Brothers Jayden and Brycen Catoe, students at Sumter High School, were outside enjoying their Sunday evening with family on Oct. 24. At about 7 p.m., the pair attempted to set up their family's fire pit in the backyard. As Jayden poured gasoline into the pit, the fire blew back at the gas can and erupted in his hands, burning both him and his brother. Paramedics responded to the home and transported the brothers to a hospital in Augusta, Georgia. Brycen was taken by ambulance to the Pediatric Burn Unit at JMS Burn Center of Doctors Hospital with second-degree burns on his leg. According to Pat Buddin, Jayden and Brycen's aunt, he recovered from his injuries and returned home three days after the incident. He has returned to school and a normal life since. However, Jayden remains in the ICU unit in Augusta, Georgia. Jayden was airlifted to the same hospital and taken to the Pediatric Trauma Burn ICU after sustaining third-degree burns to 60% of his body and was placed in a medically induced coma. He spent 158 days in the Burn ICU before being moved to the Pediatric ICU, Buddin said. Currently, Jayden is no longer in a coma and is able to maneuver in a wheelchair, rolling himself from his bed to the door. He is able to walk but with assistance as his legs are still weak, Buddin said. While he has overcome many feats, Buddin said he has a "long period of recovery" ahead. As he battles with juvenile diabetes, he has certain criteria to meet before he is able to be transferred to an inpatient rehabilitation center in Atlanta, Georgia. He will return to the burn center for reconstructive surgeries after completing the rehab program, she said. Saturday's fundraiser barbecue was to help pay for both brothers' medical bills, an estimated $15 million. Their family and friends wanted to do their part to relieve some of that stress from the Catoes. Starting at 6 a.m. Saturday, family and friends filed into the Northside kitchen with their arms full of ingredients. For nearly five hours, Doc Jolly, the cook for the fundraiser, and his team of volunteers utilized every inch of counter space and the extra tables lying around to prepare food. When the food was ready, plates were filled and packed away into plastic bags to be carried out to cars. Although Jayden could not attend, his brothers, Brycen, and their older brother, Brandon Hudson, were all smiles with the turnout. The pair greeted those who purchased plates and directed them to the pick-up station. From noon to 2 p.m., family friends Ginger Graham, Amber and Mark Schmitt, Brandi Springs, Taylor Harris and more carried plates out to firefighters, deputies and community members who purchased plates and bought extras while in line. There was an average of four to six plates being placed in each car. At $8 per plate, the family was able to raise more than $5,000, Buddin said. Hudson shared his gratitude for his family and the Sumter community for coming together. "I honestly don't think we could've pulled it off had it not been for Doc and everyone in the kitchen," Hudson said. "It's good that our family could really pull together given everything that's happened." To make a monetary donation to the Catoe family, donations are being accepted at Jayden and Brycen Catoe Medical Emergency Help on GoFundMe. Posted Wednesday, October 27, 2021 6:00 am BY ALAYSHA MAPLE alaysha@theitem.com The lives of the Durham-Catoe family changed drastically this past Sunday night. Brothers Jayden and Brycen Catoe, a junior and sophomore at Sumter High School, were outside enjoying their Sunday evening with family until about 7 p.m., when the two attempted to set up their family's fire pit in the backyard. As Jayden poured gasoline into the pit, the fire blew back at the gas can and erupted in his hands. Paramedics responded to the home and transported the brothers to Augusta, Georgia. Brycen was taken by ambulance to the Pediatric Burn Unit at JMS Burn Center of Doctors Hospital with second-degree burns on his leg. According to Dawna McMackin, a family friend of parents, Candace Durham, Chris Catoe and step-father Randy Durham, he underwent a successful surgery Monday morning and was released the same day and returned home with his older brother and grandmother. However, his brother's case was not the same. Jayden was transported by helicopter to the same hospital and taken to the Pediatric Trauma Burn ICU after sustaining third-degree burns to 60% of his body and was placed in a medically induced coma, according to McMackin. He was scheduled for surgery on Tuesday after being unable to be operated on Monday morning. McMackin said Jayden will require several surgeries during the next few months and will be sedated and intubated for at least three weeks for the surgeries to be completed. Because of his severe burns as well as his diabetes, no specific timeline on recovery has been released. McMackin currently runs the Pray for Jayden and Brycen Catoe Facebook and GoFundMe pages and requested community members donate whatever they can for the family. "We wanted to do our part," said McMackin's husband, Jason. Despite recently moving to Florida, the couple acted fast when they heard the news and looked for ways to alleviate some of the stress the family could experience in the coming months. Donations to GoFundMe are to help with expenses for hotels and food as Candace and Randy get set up in Augusta. McMackin said the hospital is currently helping the family, but it can't forever. There's a long road to recovery ahead for both brothers. The Durham-Catoe family asked the community to keep Jayden and Brycen in their thoughts and prayers. Donations are not required but are appreciated if people are able. If anyone would like to donate, donations are accepted at Jayden and Brycen Catoe Medical Emergency Help on GoFundMe, or donate directly via PayPal using candacehdurham@gmail.com. Families in Sumter have already started a meal train to donate to Brycen and their older brother. For updates on the Catoe brothers, people are asked to follow their Facebook page, Pray for Jayden and Brycen Catoe. [2, 3] | |
