| HIST | of Manning, South Carolina Why is he an Osteen instead of Hendrix? jkh He is the step-son of Ernest Clyde Hendrix. Date Published: August 15, 2008 'I'm still alive' Man recalls bus wreck that killed 3 By RANDY BURNS Item Staff Writer rburns@theitem.com Bill Ellis climbed aboard a bus at Harrah's Casino in Tunica, Miss., on Sunday morning, heading to the Memphis airport and ultimately to his home in Manning. Moments later, the bus careened off the highway and Ellis was thrown from the bus and into a rain-filled ditch. "I remember hollering out, 'Hang on!' Now, I don't know if I was talking to myself or others. I grabbed both of my hands to the seat. I felt totally helpless. I was going along for the ride. I was sent flying through the back window. "When the bus finally stopped, I said, 'Well, I'm still alive.'" Ellis, along with another man from Manning, Randy Osteen, and a Sumter man, Michael Barker, had been riding on the back bench of the bus along with Osteen's wife, Deloris. But, Deloris was nowhere to be found. She was trapped under the bus seat and upper baggage compartment. As soon as Ellis and the others found they could walk, they began looking for Deloris. "We called out for her but she didn't answer," Ellis said. They crawled back on the bus, hollering for Dee (Deloris). "When Randy found her, she was buried under all that debris," Ellis said. "He asked her if she was OK, and she said no. We tried to get everything off of her but we couldn't." In a few minutes, emergency personnel freed her. "They had to use the Jaws of Life," Ellis said. "But I want to say that through it all, Dee was conscious and calm. Now, we (Ellis, Barker and Randy Osteen) weren't calm." Ellis said the scene was chaotic with a lot of people yelling and screaming. It took rescuers more than an hour to remove Osteen from the bus before they could get her in a helicopter and transport her to the hospital some 40 miles away. Deloris, a sales agent/property manager at Remax By-the-Lake Real Estate Co., is in critical but stable condition in the trauma intensive care unit at Regional Medical Center of Memphis, hospital officials said Thursday. Her injuries include collapsed lungs and broken collar bones, reports indicated. Osteen's son, Stacy Osteen, said Thursday his mother remains in critical condition. She is able to talk, but she is in a lot of pain, said Shelley Rhodes, a Remax secretary. "There's also some internal bleeding." "She is scheduled to have surgery at 8 a.m. (today)," her son said. The surgery will address her broken collar bones, he said. Ellis suffered fractured ribs and numerous bumps and bruises and was treated and released from the Memphis hospital. Barker also had minor bumps and bruises and was treated and released. Randy Osteen was found to have a torn rotator cuff and was admitted to the hospital Sunday night and discharged Monday. Four other people on the trip, which contained passengers from South Carolina on a promotional trip offered by the casino, died in the accident. What had been a fun weekend had quickly turned to tragedy and horror. "We were just about a mile from the casino on our way to the airport," Ellis said. "Everybody was in a good mood. A man a couple of rows in front of us hollered out, 'What's this guy in a hurry for?' And there were few others mumbling but nobody did anything about it." Ellis said soon the bus began to skid. "It was raining steadily, and the bus started skidding right to left," Ellis said. "When it hit the median (grassy and gravely surface), the bus turned over several times. I don't know how many times." Ellis said the family wishes to thank everybody for their prayers and we ask that you continue to pray for her.
