| HIST | William C. Mercer Jr. WILLIAM MERCER OBITUARY FARMVILLE - Dr. William Cassie Mercer Jr., 80, passed away at home with his children by his side on Tuesday, Jan. 24, 2006. The funeral service will be conducted Friday at 11 a.m. at the First Baptist Church of Farmville. Burial will follow in Woodlawn Cemetery in Williamston. Dr. Mercer, son of the late Dr. William Cassie and Grace Beasley Mercer, was a native of Williamston and longtime resident of Farmville. After graduating as president of student body at Williamston High School, he completed post-graduate studies at Virginia Episcopal School in Lynchburg, Va. He was a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and completed additional post-graduate studies at Wake Forest University. In addition, he received his Doctorate of Dental Science (DDS) degree from the University of Tennessee at Memphis in 1957. He was a World War II veteran, having proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps. Dr. Mercer practiced dentistry in both Farmville and Greenville for more than 48 years and was a member of the Eastern NC Dental Society. He was also a longtime member of the First Baptist Church of Farmville, where he had served as a Sunday School teacher. Dr. Mercer was an avid reader who was passionate about war and history. He shared his love for cooking with friends and neighbors. He was also an accomplished woodworker and artist, having recently completed his last work, an oil portrait, in June 2005. In addition to his parents, Dr. Mercer was preceded in death by his wife, Carolyn Sue Dilda Mercer. He is survived by his sons, Daniel Britton Mercer and William Stuart Mercer both of Farmville; daughter, Evelyn Caroline Mercer of Raleigh; sister, Nancy Mercer Smith of Whiteville; special nephews, Edward Lewis Smith of San Antonio, Texas, William Mercer Smith of New York and Robert Beasley Smith of Sumter, S.C.; special nieces, Nan Smith Yates of High Point and Betty Grace Smith of Charlotte. The family will receive friends tonight from 7 to 9 at Wilkerson Funeral Home in Greenville. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Baptist Church of Farmville, 205 East Wilson St., Farmville, NC 27828; or Community Home Care & Hospice, 2506 Charles Blvd., Greenville, NC 27858.
