Louis Douglas Barden, 86, passed away February 15, 2009, after a brief illness. Born August 11, 1922, in Charleston, he was the only child of Lonnie L. and Nellie Morse Barden. He was a member of the South Carolina Highway Patrol for forty years, where he last served as captain. During his tenure on the Patrol, Doug also served as chief of security for Governor James B. Edwards from 1975-1979. He trained many troopers and helped to establish the first present-day SWAT teams. His deep, abiding love and respect for the Patrol and its dedicated members -- current and former -- remained true and steadfast up until the time of his death. As a young man, Doug was a Golden Gloves boxer. He was a graduate of North Charleston High School where he played and lettered in boxing, football and baseball. He also attended Northwestern University. He served in the Coast Guard for three years during World War II and shortly thereafter joined the Highway Patrol. He was a life member of Greenwood Masonic Lodge #91 and former president of the Hejaz Temple in Greenwood. Doug was a member of North Trenholm Baptist Church. Surviving are his beloved wife of thirty years, Sandy; sons and daughters-in-law, David and Susan, and Larry and Alicia; grandchildren, Charlotte, Will, Victoria and Reese; and constant four-legged companions, Lucy, Pollyanna, Tarzan, Ginger, Wittie and Loulou. As Doug dearly loved his church and animals, in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Humane Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (HSPCA), North Trenholm Baptist Church, or to the charity of one’s choice. Doug was a consummate “people person” who never met a stranger. His presence touched many lives, and he was loved -- and will be missed -- by all who knew him. Services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at North Trenholm Baptist Church with burial in Greenlawn Memorial Park. Serving as honorary pallbearers will be law enforcement officers, both current and retired, as well as the members of Bill Donahue’s Sunday School Class. Visitation will be Wednesday 5:30-7:30 p.m. at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel. Please sign online guest book at www.dunbarfunerals.com. [1] | |
