| HIST | Date Published: October 15, 2009 HOLLIS HAZEL McCLARY Hollis Hazel McClary, 71, husband of Lucy Green McClary, was born April 11, 1938, in Sumter. He was the third oldest of eight children born to the late Rembert and Louise Magazine McClary. He departed this life on Sunday, Oct. 11, 2009, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center. Hollis was affectionately known by family and friends as "Speedy," "Hollywood" and most especially "Road Hog." He was educated in the public schools of Sumter and was a lifelong and devoted member of Beulah AME Church. He was a member of the trustee board, church school, the Sons of Allen, the male chorus and the lay organization. He was the church sexton for 30 years. Mr. McClary received many awards and recognition for his love and dedication to the church, including being selected as "Man of the Year" and "Father of the Year." He was a life member of the Sumter Branch of the NAACP. Mr. McClary was employed by Korn Industries for 39 years and also did part time lawn and janitorial services for churches and businesses in the Sumter community. He leaves to cherish his memories: a loving and devoted wife, Lucy Green McClary of the home; his children, Penny (Larry) Gourdine of Ellicott City, Md., Hollis Rembert (Lorna) McClary of Charleston and Dorene (Joe Jr.) Hopkins of Eatontown, N.J.; six sisters, Nellie L. (Matthew) Allen, Bettye L. Hawkins, Annie Mae D'Oliveira, Marie China and Irene (Wilbur) Primus, all of North Philadelphia, Pa., and Charlotte (Leon) Kelley of Sumter; five grandchildren, Erica, Joe III, David, Tarik and Brianna; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends including two special friends, Lucious Felder and Capt. Thomas Presley. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Rembert McClary Jr. and Edward McClary. Viewing will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. today at Job's Mortuary. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Beulah AME Church with the presiding elder, the Rev. Dr. Robert L. McCants Sr., eulogist, assisted by the Rev. Henry J. Murray Jr., the Rev. Sammie Simmons, the Rev. Dr. Friendly Gadson and the Rev. William Randolph. Interment will follow in Beulah Cemetery. The body will be placed in the church at 10 a.m. Friday for viewing until the hour of service. The family will receive friends at the home, 396 Rogers Ave., Sumter, SC 29150.
