"It is still under investigation, and we haven't ruled out it being a homicide," Dennis said. BY RANDY BURNS rburns@theitem.com A 34-year-old Sumter man remained unconscious at Tuomey Regional Medical Center on Monday after being found unconscious and unresponsive on his couch by his parents on Feb. 27 Randy Timmons, of 250 Pearson Road, is in critical condition and fighting for his life, according to Maj. Larry Florence of the Sumter County Sheriff's Office. "It's my understanding that he has not gained consciousness at any time he's been in the hospital," Florence said. At this point, investigators do not know if Timmons is a victim of a crime or if his injuries were caused by an accident, he said. "The investigation is continuing," Florence said. "Initially, we were looking at this as an assault and battery with intent to kill. But at this point, we don't have any evidence that shows that a crime took place. But we're not ruling anything out." Florence said Timmons suffered bruising and swelling to his head and body, a black eye, possible punctures on his legs and scrapes on his elbows. Timmons had told a neighbor the day before he was found that he was injured by a horse, Florence said. "He did have a couple of horses," Florence said. "We just don't know what happened at this point. It is possible that all of this was caused by an accident." Florence said there was no sign of a break-in. He said when his parents found him, his front door was locked. Florence said he doesn't know why someone would hurt Timmons and that he has no criminal record. Anyone with information is asked to call the Sumter County Sheriff's Office at (803) 436-2700 or Crime Stoppers at (803) 436-2718. Posted in News, Local news on Tuesday, March 16, 2010 RANDY W.
