Born in Clarendon County, he was a son of the late William Hughey and Bertha Ethel Corbett Thigpen. Mr. Thigpen was a member of First Baptist Church in Bishopville and was the owner of Donald Thigpen Garage and Machine Shop. Survivors include three sons, Craig Thigpen (Traci) of Augusta, Ga., Michael Thigpen (Tricia) of Florence and Don Thigpen Jr. (Missy) of Tennessee; two brothers, Willie Mack Thigpen (Dorothy Mae) of Maxton, N.C., and Ernest Thigpen (Mary) of Bishopville; and two sisters, Ruby Chandler of Olanta and Mary Lee Coker of Sumter. Grandpa Don loved and adored all of his grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at noon Thursday at Hancock-Elmore-Hill Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Sam Stevens officiating. The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. to noon Thursday at Hancock-Elmore-Hill Funeral Home. Hancock-Elmore-Hill Funeral Home of Bishopville is in charge of the arrangements.
