Born in Chesterfield, she was a daughter of the late James Carpenter and Mary Ellen Caulder Carpenter. She was a member of Crosswell Baptist Church and retired from Becton-Dickinson. Survivors include five children, Ernest Hendrix (Avanell) of Sumter, Margaret H. Quick (Lewis) of Bennettsville, Marie H. Browder (Cecil) of Sumter, Betty Jean H. Davis (Oscar) of Sumter, and Clara H. Preast of Sumter; a daughter-in-law, Toni Hendrix of Sumter; 20 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Odessa Hyatt of Charlotte. She was preceded in death by a son, Walker Lee Hendrix; and a son-in-law, Elias Preast. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday in the Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Charles Owens and the Rev. Cecil Browder Jr. officiating. Burial will be at 4:30 p.m. Monday in Sunset Memorial Park cemetery in Bennettsville. Grandsons and great-grandsons will serve as pallbearers and honorary pallbearers. The family will receive friends from 12 to 1 p.m. Monday at Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and other times at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Davis, 1845 Plowden Mill Road.
