GUMMERSON Posted Thursday, November 5, 2020 6:00 am Retired U.S. Air Force Chief Master Sgt. Alfred S. Gummerson, 90, widower of Miriam K. Gummerson, passed away peacefully on Monday, Nov. 2, 2020, at the home of his daughter. Born on March 12, 1930, in Newton, New Jersey, he was a son of the late Stanley Gummerson and Margaret Begraft. He graduated from Newton High School in 1947 and entered the Army Air Force the same week. Upon completion of basic training, he was assigned to the 20th Fighter Group at Shaw Field. He completed Jet Propulsion Mechanic School in 1948 and served the 20th Fighter Group from 1947 to 1955. He trained and deployed to Europe with the First Air Force Wing with tactical nuclear weapons in 1951 to 1952. Tours of duty included 20th, 312th, 329th and 387th Fighter Groups of TAC and ADC; 56th Air Commando Wing, 377th ABG and 56th Special Operations Wings of PACAF; Headquarters 9th AF, Ftr/Recon Branch, Director of Logistics of TAC; 10th TAC Recon Wing of USAFE, and the 68th Bomb Wing of SAC. He was awarded the Bronze Star, Meritorious Service Medal, three Air Force Commendation Medals, the Republic of Vietnam Air Service Medal and four Vietnam Service Medals. He retired from the U.S. Air Force, Becton-Dickinson Vacutainer Systems and was the owner of Apteryx Kiwi Farm. He was a member of Northside Memorial Baptist Church, the Air Force Association, American Legion, Shaw AFB Chiefs Group, Top Enlisted Association of the US, B.P.O.E. (Elks) Lodge #2679 of Calabash, North Carolina, Air Commando Association and VFW Post 3034. Survivors include four children, Dr. William M. Gummerson (Carrie) of Boone, North Carolina, Karen Hyatt (Eddie Dew) of Sumter, Doris Barnette (Mark) of Sumter and Curtis Gummerson; a brother, Joseph Goble of Ocala, Florida; seven grandchildren, Justin Hyatt, Jordan Barnette, Rebecca Barnette, Meredith Gummerson, Emma Gummerson, Samantha Hollis and Lillian West; and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, James Gummerson. A graveside service with full military honors will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at Evergreen Memorial Park cemetery with the Rev. Jimmy Holley and the Rev. Bryan Rogers officiating. Those attending are asked to wear a mask and practice social distancing. The family will receive friends at the home of his daughter, Karen, 1785 Titanic Court. The family would like to express a special thank you to Dr. Jodi Belinski and staff, Amedisys Hospice, and Debbie Newman, who showed our father much love and compassion during the last year.
