The hardware store has been open more than a month and will hold its grand opening on Wednesday. BY JAMIE H. WILSON Special to The Item A familiar store with a familiar name is officially reopening its doors to the public on Wednesday, offering customers the same merchandise alongside an expanded selection of products and services. Simpson Pinewood Hardware at Savannah Plaza has been open for more than a month after initially closing its doors in 2011. Since that time, the store has undergone remodeling and a general update under new owner Carl M. Simpson III, who owns the three other area Simpson Hardware stores. Brother of former owner Robert Simpson, Carl Simpson said he decided to take the helm of the store because the "Pinewood Road area demographics were too strong to overlook." "The newly opened Simpson Pinewood Hardware will concentrate on being a great neighborhood hardware store," said Carl Simpson. "Other than having a well-stocked traditional hardware store, this location will emphasize lawn and garden and will also offer a small assortment of sporting goods, including hunting and fishing." Benjy Roof, manager at the Pinewood location, said the store offers a few things that aren't found at the other stores, such as lumber and guttering. Roof said they had no trouble getting their loyal customer base back once the store reopened. "They are glad we're back," he said. "We are getting a lot of our regulars back." For more than 50 years, Sumter has been home to the family owned and operated Simpson Hardware stores. The store has a footprint in nearly every concentration of retail business in the county. The franchise started with Carl M. Simpson Jr., Simpson's father, who opened a hardware store in Camden and then later in Hartsville. The elder Simpson sold both stores in 1961 in order to buy the former Boyle Hardware in 1961. The Simpson Hardware at Savannah Plaza opened in the '70s between store openings in Palmetto Plaza and Manning. The store is currently operated by a third generation of the Simpson family - Frankie and Leigh Carraway (nee Simpson) and Shawn and Molly Matthews (nee Simpson). Carl Simpson said the stores put a "special emphasis on a wide selection of quality merchandise, competitive prices, legendary customer service and quality personnel " which Simpson said contributes to the franchise's continued growth. Simpson Pinewood Hardware is located at 350 Pinewood Road and is open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Saturday. Contact the store at (803) 774-2275.
