Main St., Sumter, South Carolina Mary Bell Gillard Mary Bell Gillard was born July 31, 1947, in Sumter, a daughter of the late Deacon Collins and Mary Hastie Gillard, and departed this earthly life on Saturday, July 20, 2013, at Palmetto Health Richland hospital. Her grandparents are the late James and Lula Wright Hastie and the late Frank and Isabelle Gillard. In her early childhood, she joined New Bethel Missionary Baptist Church. She was a faithful and dedicated Christian worker. She served as the young adult Sunday school teacher number one; past chairperson of the ladies missionary circle number two; past secretary for the gospel choir; and a member of the trustee and education ministries. She was a member of the senior missionary society, mass choir, past church secretary, and Vacation Bible School teacher. She was educated in the public school systems of Sumter and was a 1965 graduate of Lincoln High School. She earned her bachelor of science degree in 1969 and a masters of education degree from South Carolina State University. She received numerous certificates in religious studies, data processing, nurse’s aide, and real estate licensures. Her professional career as an educator expanded over 33 years with Sumter School District 2 and Clarendon School District 2. Mary was the recipient of various honors/awards from the Wateree Association as the South Carolina Youth Missionary Coordinator and South Carolina Congress of Christian Education. She held many religious positions on state and local levels, including: South Carolina Region No. 5 E&M Youth Board co-coordinator; Woman’s Baptist Youth Convention (Lower Divison); Wateree Association Youth Advisor; Wateree Association Young Woman’s Auxiliary (YWA); retreat chairperson; and member of the Wateree Choir Auxiliary. Mary was actively involved in many community organizations, to include: member of the National Council of Negro Women (NCNW) and life member of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). Locally, she served as past president of the Ebonette Social Club; member of the Starlight Savings Club; director of Stark-Dunbar-Gandy; curriculum coordinator, summer program, at Morris College; and a member of the Sumter Democratic Party Housing Council. Her favorite gospel song was “Order My Steps” and her favorite Scripture was Proverbs 3:5-6. Her philosophy of life was “Faith in Christ will keep you steady in the stormy sea of change.” She leaves to cherish her memories: her sisters, Collete G. Andrews of Sumter, Louise Dukes (Roy) of Lewisburg, Tenn., and Carolyn G. Gaffney (Vandy Sr.) of Orangeburg; one uncle, Ezekiel Hastie; two aunts, Lucile Hastie and Rhunette Dennis; five nephews, Eric Andrews (Yvette), Craig Andrews (Debra), Cedric Dukes (Esterlene), Collins Landon Dukes (Tiffany) and Vandy T. Gaffney; one niece, Vanna Nichole Gaffney; four grandnieces, Erika, Charlene, Kaleigh and Danielle; two grandnephews, Myles and Preston; two great-grandnephews, Ayden and Jayden; one great-grandniece, Aalyric; and host of other relatives and friends. Public viewing will be held from 2 to 7 p.m. today. Homegoing services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at New Bethel Missionary Baptist Church, 3249 U.S. 15 South, with Pastor Willie A. Wright Jr., eulogist, assisted by the Revs. Charles Davis, Marion Newton, Derrie Grant, Sammie Simmons, Herbert Johnson, Larry Weston, Luns C. Richardson, Leroy Blanding and Calvin K. Hastie Sr. Interment will follow in Hillside Memorial Park. The family is receiving friends at the home, 911 S. Main St., Sumter.
