FLORENCE - Mr. Edward Stanley Baldwin, 81, died Tuesday, April 19, 2016, IN McLeod Regional Medical Center, Florence, after an illness. Funeral service will be held at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, April 23, 2016, at Carolina Funeral Home, Scranton. Burial, with full military honors, will follow in Matthews Cemetery, Lake City. The family will receive friends from 1:00 3:00 p.m. Saturday prior to the service at the funeral home. Mr. Baldwin was born June 5, 1934, in Lake City, son of the late John Kelly Baldwin and Cecil Matthews Baldwin. He was a 1952 graduate of J. Paul Truluck High School of Lake City, The University of South Carolina, The University of the State of New York, and The Military War College of Carlisle, PA. He was a longtime faithful member of Florence Bible Chapel for over 40 years, serving in many capacities. Mr. Baldwin began a forty-two year military career when he enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1950 and ended at his retirement with the rank of brigadier general. Some of his many commendations include the Armed Forces Reserve Medal (40Yr), Army Reserve Component Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Army Commendation Medal, S.C. Active States Service Medal W/4 Silver Stars, S.C. Governor's Unit Citation W/1OLC, and the Legion of Merit Award. In 1984 he received the state's highest award, The Order of the Palmetto. Mr. Baldwin had multiple military commands throughout the state, retiring in 1992 as Assistant Adjutant General for the South Carolina National Guard. Surviving are his wife, June Baldwin of Florence; children, Rae Baldwin (Dennis) Smith and Edward Stanley Baldwin, Jr, both of Lake City; grandsons, Robbie (Terre) Strickland and Kelly Strickland; granddaughter, Amy Smith; great-grandchildren, Caleb, Madison, Jackson, Corbett, Felicia Rae and Emma Grace Strickland and TJ Jarrell; and a sister, Amelia Beard of Lake City. Mr. Baldwin was preceded in death by his first wife, Felicia McCutcheon Baldwin; brothers, Kenneth Baldwin and Harley Baldwin; sisters, Viva Lee, Glenda Swails, Margie McDonald and Marie Ussery.
