- " Joseph FRANCIS b 1765 near Willtown, SC moved to Sumter Co., SC ca 1778 was in Clarendon Co., in
1790, served during the American Revolution in Capt. James Winter's Company, following his receiving a Receipt of Character from Sumter County residents in 1801:
"Capt. Joseph WEST; Ensign Jesse NETTLES Jr.; Hugh NORTON; Thomas & William BROADWAY; Jesse TIMMONS; John CHINA; Benjamin HODGE; John KELLEY; James SIMMONS; Noah NICHOLS; Peter C. BRUNSON; Richard TAYLOR; Thomas MCELVEEN; James & William WEEKS; George DUKES; Thomas & Jacob OSTEEN. Which stated Joseph was well known in that county and was an honest and peaceable man. This was filed along with his application for a Revolutionary War Military Pension. Other wise, it might have been forever lost. Whoever wrote it, could write very little and the spelling was atrocious. That is also when he and his wife Judia sold their land on the White Oak Branch of the Black River. He moved his large family (12 known children) to Amite Co., MS and was in Catahoula Parish, LA by 1821, where he died in 1838."
The above information was originally compiled by Mrs. W.O. Mattie Melvina FRANCIS Richey, a g-g-granddaughter, now deceased in the1950's. Her query was located in The SC Historical Magazine, Vol. 55, No. 3, July 1954."
