- Caroline and Lawrence are the only two children of Dempsey Griffin who have only the birth year and not the complete date of birth entered into the Griffin Bible. Scraps of a family record page of another Bible give the birth and death dates of Caroline and the births of her first 8 children. ( In possession of Mrs. Pauline Wells Hughes, Chadbourne, N. C. 1974). Caroline married Charles W. Wells (Certificate of death for their daughter Theodocia R. Wells Kolb). In the 1850 Sumter Census #525, Charles, 21 years, and Caroline declared they had been married within a year. They were last found on the census records for Sumter-Clarendon in 1870 at Friendship Twp., Clarendon County, #179. Caroline was alive in 1880, but Charles may have been dead and the family broken up. One of their sons was living with a married daughter. Another son, Lawrence, was living with Caroline's brother Robert Griffin. No tombstones have been found for Caroline or Charles. Mrs. John Broadway of Sumter, S.C., granddaughter of Nelson Griffin, stated in 1976 that she remembers a grave, marked only with field stones which are now gone, in the large lot in the Weeks Griffin Cemetery where Charles and Caroline's daughter Theodocia R. Wells and husband William Thomas Kolb are buried.
