| HIST | Martha (Calhoun) Williams | Visit Guest Book LANCASTER - Martha Calhoun Williams, 93, passed away peacefully Saturday, December 17, 2011 in Rock Hill, S.C. Funeral services will take place at the First Presbyterian Church in Lancaster, SC. on Monday, December 19, 2011 at 2 p.m. Burial will follow at Lancaster Memorial Park. Family will receive friends from 1:30 to 2 at the church. Her six nephews will serve as honorary pallbearers. Martha, the daughter of the late Sallie Galloway and A. L. Calhoun, Jr., was born in Clio, SC on February 3, 1918. Following her graduation from Columbia College in 1939, she taught elementary school in McCall and Pageland, SC. She married James W. Williams December 29, 1945, and Martha worked as the bookkeeper at their drug store, the City Drug, in Lancaster until their retirement in 1986. Martha was active in many organizations in her community. She was especially proud to participate in working to establish a branch of the University of South Carolina in Lancaster. Those who knew Martha are inspired by her devotion to friends and family. Her love for and involvement in the lives of her children, grandchildren, siblings and their children leaves a lasting impression on those who love her. Martha was preceded in death by many dear ones: her parents, her husband Jim of 44 years; sisters, Tennessee Crawford of Lancaster, SC, Ohlyne Blackard of Jacksonville, Florida, Hazel Strange of Kingstree, SC; brothers, Legare, Archibald, Charles and Hal of Clio, SC . Her surviving brother is Marvin G. Calhoun of San Jose, Ca. Her children and grandchildren survive to cherish her memory: daughter Martha De Caro and husband Tom of Montgomery, Al; son James W. Williams Jr. of Lancaster, SC; granddaughters, Legare De Caro Speece and husband Todd of Mill Valley, Ca, Sallie Hutchinson and husband Patrick of Charleston, SC and Louisa De Caro of Brooklyn, NY. Martha's great-granddaughters are Tennie Hutchinson and Otelia Speece. The family is very grateful to the staff at Westminster for the compassionate care Martha received during her illness.
