| HIST | Raymond J. Mathis Jr. Raymond Jenkins “Chic” Mathis Jr., age 93, beloved husband of 65 years to Irene Chokes Mathis, died on Monday, Nov. 18, 2013, at his residence. Mr. Mathis was born on Oct. 6, 1920, in Wedgefield, a son of the late Raymond and Emma Lillian Burress Mathis. He proudly served his country in the Navy and retired from active duty on Aug. 8, 1946. Mr. Mathis was an entrepreneur, owning and operating many businesses over the years, including: the Manhattan Restaurant with his wife; Gamecock Packaging Stores; Central Distributing; Chic-A-Dee Restaurants; and co-owner of Jersey Mikes Sub Shop. He was a member of Claremont Lodge No. 64 for more than 60 years and was a member of Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church of Columbia. In addition to his business ventures, Mr. Mathis was a member of various organizations, had many accomplishments, and received numerous awards over the years, some of which include: serving on the USS Aylwin (DD355); president of the South Carolina Beer Association from 1968 to 1970; recipient of the S.C. Beer Association Hammer; advocate, benefactor and friend of USC Sumter; president of the Rotary Club from 1979 to 1980; Veteran of Foreign Wars for Sumter County Post 3039 and commander from 1965 to 1966; president of the Partisans Club from 1973 to 1977; Distinguished Service Award from USC in 1993; Lynden B. Johnson Inaugural Committee Participation; Stand-By for the Colors; the Order of the Palmetto; the Senate of the State-Appreciation of Dedicated Service Award; past chairman of the Democrat Party; House of Representatives Appreciation Dedicated Service Award; Town of Kingstree Resolution Appreciation; Sumter Area Tech Education Commission; Highway Commissioner of South Carolina; American Legion for more than 60 years; Sumter County Council Appreciation; Sumter Area Tech Education Commission Dedicated Service for SCYD; member of the board of directors for the Sumter Merchants Association; chairman of the South Carolina Highway Commission; member of the Mid-Carolina Commission for Higher Education; South Carolina Highways and Public Transportation Service Award; Sumter County Development Award; and the director of the South Carolina Greater Sumter Chamber of Commerce. Surviving in addition to his wife are a son, Dr. Stephen Marcus Mathis of Canton, Ga.; and a sister, Carolyn M. Kizer of Summerville. A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday in the Bullock Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Fr. Michael A. Platanis officiating. Entombment will follow in Sumter Cemetery with military honors. "He had a tremendous amount of get up and go," said Ramon Schwartz Jr., a Sumter attorney who served as Speaker of the House from 1980 to 1986. "He just did a good job in anything he ever undertook." Raymond Jenkins "Chic" Mathis Jr. died Monday. Born in Wedgefield in 1920, the 93-year-old businessman owned and operated the Manhattan Restaurant, Gamecock Packaging Stores, Central Distributing and Chic-A-Dee Restaurants through the years. He was also the co-owner of Jersey Mikes Sub Shop. "He worked very hard to be successful," said Margaret Gowder, who worked with Mathis off and on for 60 years. "He was like a father to me, and she (Irene Mathis, his wife of 65 years) was like a mother to me. My husband was in the military. The first 10 years we were married, he was gone eight. He (Chic Mathis) was always there for me. He had my back. I'd just tell him if I had a problem or anything, and he never, ever said a cross word to me. Now, he had a temper, but he never said a cross word to me." Sumter County Coroner Harvin Bullock described Mathis as not only a "very successful businessman" but "just a good guy." "He was a delightful and colorful individual," Bullock said. "I'm nothing but complimentary when it comes to Chic. He was a friend of mine and a supporter. I always appreciated that. I thoroughly enjoyed his company and his insights into things." Not everyone loved Chic Mathis right away, but he eventually won them over. "We were not friends at first. We were competitors," said Phil Leventis, former senator. "As highway commissioner, he did a remarkable job for Sumter. We got to be good friends and remained so the rest of his life. I was sad to hear about his passing. "He was an independent kind of guy, and he worked hard to build the things that he had. He loved to be out and about meeting and getting to know people. He was always involved in things and liked to head things up. It was his nature." Mathis' many memberships and awards included: serving his country in the Navy; serving as president of the S.C. Beer Association; recipient of the S.C.
