Family and friends are invited to attend his visitation from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday at James A. Dyal Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held at noon on Saturday at Bethany United Methodist Church, 118 W. 3rd S. Street, Summerville. Burial will follow at Bethany Cemetery, 10 Cunnington Ave., Charleston. Thomas was born on March 20, 1936, in Sumter, a son of the late James and Dorothy Shirah. He served in the U.S. armed forces and the U.S. Army Reserves. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend. He was a frequently seen figure either riding his bike or walking the Saw Mill Bike Path in downtown Summerville. He also enjoyed visiting the local establishments, where he was known very well. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him. Survivors in addition to his wife are a son, Stephen Shirah (Mary); grandchildren, Thomas Slade Shirah, Robert Augustus Shirah and Marion Ardis Shirah; and siblings, Heywood Shirer and Virginia McDearis. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by siblings, Samuel Shirah Sr., Bernard Shirah and Mildred Shirah.
