| HIST | of Sumter, South Carolina ERNEST CLYDE HENDRIX Posted Sunday, June 1, 2025 2:48 pm Ernest Clyde Hendrix, 87, husband of 54 years to the late Lois A. “Avanell” Hendrix, passed away Saturday, May 31, 2025, at his home. Born April 20, 1938, in Bennettsville, S.C., he was a son of the late Leroy Hendrix and Edith Louise Carpenter Hendrix. He was a member of Harmony Church and served God faithfully for more than 50 years. He was the chaplain for the Sumter County Jail for 27 years and a member of The Gideons International for more than 20 years. He was self-employed in the upholstery business for 52 years. Survivors include two stepchildren, Randy Osteen (Dee) of Manning and Annell Smith (L.D.) of Summerton; four grandchildren, Darla Lowder, Stacy Osteen, Tina Timmons and Jonnell Atkins; five great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Marie H. Browder and Betty Jean H. Davis (Oscar), all of Sumter; and a number of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two great-granddaughters, Courtney Hodge and Eaddy Osteen; a brother, Walker Lee Hendrix; and two sisters, Clara “Punkin” H. Preast and Margaret H. Quick. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 3, 2025, in the Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Skeet Keaton officiating. Burial will be in the Mt. Pleasant Primitive Baptist Church cemetery near Bishopville. Pallbearers will be Mark Campbell, Trey Griffin, Bubba Preast, Tony Preast, Bubba Browder and Ozzie Davis. Honorary pallbearers will be members of The Gideons International. The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 3, 2025 at Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home. The family would like to extend their appreciation to special caregiver, Pat Wilson, for her dedication to Mr. Hendrix. Memorials may be made to Harmony Church, P.O.
