Henry McMaster announced Wednesday. Jonathan Jones has been with Clarendon County Fire Department for the last 15 years and has served as deputy chief of operations for the department since 2014, according to a news release announcing his appointment. Jones has 22 years of experience in emergency response training and operations, the release said. Jones said he was pleased to be selected. "I am very honored that he has that kind of faith in me that he would select me for the position," Jones said. McMaster praised Jones' qualifications. "We have a new fire marshal in Jonathan Jones who has stood every test, who knows his business and has the trust of his colleagues," McMaster said. Jones is former president of the S.C. State Firefighters Association, a member of the S.C. Firefighters' Hall of Fame and a recipient of the S.C. Fire Service Educator of the Year award and the Meritorious Action Award, according to the release. The S.C. State Fire Marshal serves over the Fire and Life Safety Division of the S.C. Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation and is responsible for oversight of the state's 208-acre fire academy, the statewide Emergency Response Task Force and state fire safety regulations. Jones said most of his training was through the fire academy and on the job in Clarendon County and at the South Lynches Fire Department in Florence County. He attended University of South Carolina Sumter, and his degree is from USC Aiken through the bridge program, he said. Jones, a native of Manning, said his name was submitted to the governor as a candidate, and he went through a vetting process and interviews. He explained some of the responsibilities of the Fire and Life Safety Division. "One is what you would traditionally think of as a fire marshal role, and that's codes and compliance, engineering and design, risk reduction, fire prevention and those kinds of things," he said. "There is an assistant fire marshal that has those responsibilities." The S.C. Fire Academy is another part of the division, and there is a superintendent over the academy, he said. He said there is also the response branch of the division. "That is comprised of firefighter mobilization, the emergency response task force as well as the helicopter rescue team," Jones said. He said a forest fire is primarily the jurisdiction of the S.C. Forestry Commission. "The FLSD role would be in supplementing resources for the local fire departments," Jones said. "For example, if Sumter County had a major wildfire and they needed more resources than Sumter, Richland, Kershaw and Lee counties could provide, they would send a request that ultimately comes to the firefighting mobilization division." In cases of arson, Jones said South Carolina Law Enforcement Division is the primary investigating agency, but if there is a fatality, the division would assist the local fire department with gathering data and looking into what led to the fire, what the victim was doing at the time of the fire and whether there were working smoke alarms and any other protective devices in place. He said the purpose is to help the risk reduction section of the division target public education materials to those most at risk of being fire victims. [1] | |
