- The following is a biographical sketch of the Robert Patterson Little and Elizabeth Cain family: By Jack and Eleanor Lotz: ....William Cain (Authors notes - grandfather of Elizabeth Cain; of whose early history litttle is known except that he was a soldier of the Revolutionary period and went through the entire seven years of the war. After the war, he returned to his home in South Carolina, and having lost his first wife married Sarah Linam.
James Cain (father of Elizabeth), one of the sons of this marriage was born in Sumter District, South Carolina, August 4, 1794. He was taken to Georgia by his mother when he was a child, his father having died prior to that time. If it is becoming to preserve the personal memoirs of the men who were identified with the early settlement of this state, it is certainly equally as proper to make favorable mention of the heroic women who faced the perils of the wilderness, frequently with dependent children. Of this kind was the mother of James Cain, (Sarah Linam Cain), a woman of noble mold, of unselfish devotion, strong and courageous, yet gentle and loving withal. She died August 30, 1836, just as her children were coming into possession of wealth and comfort which her energy and foresight made possible for them to attain; but she lived on in them, in their characters, and in the nobleness and simplicity of their lives. her son James Cain, at an early age realized the importance of an education, and availed himself of all opportunities to obtain it, that his small means and the country schools of that day afforded. He entered upon manhood full of energy and ambitions of success. On December 19, 1821, he married Elizabeth Granberry, a daughter of Moses and Elizabeth Granberry of Warren County Georgia. He was possessed of strong and discriminating judgement, was one of the most successful planters of his county, and accumulated property rapidly. He commanded the highest respect of his fellow citizens, and while never aspiring to any public position, he was sent to represent his county (Jefferson) in the State Legislature two or three terms and was regarded as a man whose opinion was worth consulting on all matters of public concern. He died April 21, 1870 in the seventy-sixth year of his life. His wife Nancy Granberry was born October 4, 1804 she died December 16, 1856.
James Cain (father of Elizabeth) and his brother Elisha, were active in Providence Baptist Church near the community of Grange in Jefferson County, Georgia. In 1836, they donated the land on which the meeting house now stands. One of James Cains sons, Moses P. Cain (brother of Elizabeth) later became pastor of Providence Church.
Elisha Cain was the overseer of retreat Plantation, and details of the extensive business correspondence between the owner, Alexander Telfair of Savannah and Elisha have been preserved. The overseer of the Cobb Family Plantation, Cherry Hill, was a Mr. Linam, who may have been a relative of Sarah Linam, mother of James and Elisha Cain.
