Posted Tuesday, August 1, 2017 6:00 am James "Jimmy" Timothy Mays Sr., 71, husband of Carolyn Britton Mays, died on Sunday, July 30, 2017, at Palmetto Health Tuomey. Born in Sumter, he was a son of the late Lhoman C. Mays Sr. and Hallie V. Ardis McLeod. Mr. Mays was a member of New Start Community Church of the Nazarene in Manning. He retired from Santee Print Works after 33 years of service. He was a past volunteer at Bethel Station No. 13 of the Sumter County Fire Department and past member of Summerton Hunting Club. Survivors include his wife of 52 years; four children, James Timothy "Timmy" Mays Jr. (Jessica) of Manning, and Shari Bowman (Nelson), Suzette "Suzie" Avins (Jason) and Annette Curlee (Jamie). all of Sumter; six grandchildren, Matthew Mays (Ashley), Tyler Mays, Whitney Avins, TJ Curlee, Mason Dalrymple and Noah Dalrymple; one brother, L.C. Mays Jr. (Helen) of Sumter; stepfather, Roland McLeod of Sumter; and a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday at New Start Community Church of the Nazarene with the Rev. Dale Turner, the Rev. Donna Green, the Rev. Sammy Geddings and the Rev. Bill Bennett officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Pallbearers will be Andy Hodge, Kevin Hodge, Tripp Mays, Randy Frye, Steve Borton and Zac Landry. Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Charles White, Dr. Strat Stavrou and Dr. Kent Cunningham. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and other times at the home.
