- Letter certifying the birth of Nettie Virginia Gordon:
Fannie Alice Nelson, being first duly sworn deposes and says: My maiden
name was Fannie Alice Gordon; On the 14th day of February, 1938, I will
be 71 years old; Nettie Virginia Boston, whose maiden name was Nettie
Virginia Gordon, was born in a covered wagon, in Clover Valley, State of
Nevada, on the 7th day of July, 1872; I was present at the place, date and
time she was born; and that on the 7th day of July, 1938, she will be 66
years old; that in the year 1876, when I was about 10 years old, I,
together with my sister, then Nettie Virginia Gordon, my father William
Gordon, my mother Elizabeth Ann Gordon, with other members of my
family, left Clover Valley, State of Nevada, and in the same year, 1876,
arrived in the then Territory of Arizona, now the State of Arizona,
stopping at a place near the Big Sandy; from there we moved to Phoenix,
Arizona; from Phoenix, Arizona, we moved to a place near Mormon Lake,
near a canyon, now known as the Gordon Canyon, from there we moved to
a place near to and above the Roosevelt Dam, where we lived, together
with my sister, Netttie Virginia Gordon, and other members of the family
for a number of years. From my own memory, the oral statements of my
mother and other members of the family, and the written statements of
the dates of birth of myself, Nettie Virginia Gordon, now Nettie Virginia
Boston, and other members of my family, I know that Nettie Virginia
Boston was born in a covered wagon, in Clover Valley, State of Nevada,
on July 7, 1872, and that she has been a resident of the Territory of
Arizona, now the State of Arizona, ever since the year 1876.

Nettie, my grandmother, died at our residence at 28 N. 7th St., Phoenix, Arizona.
Nettie is buried at (Twin) Double Buttes Cemetery, at 48th. St. and (University?).
She was a member of the Pioneer Club in Phoenix, I remember her going to their annual picnics.
There is a tale that she and her sister, Hattie, would ford the creek at Gordon Canyon even when the water was high. A man is said to have refused to cross the creek "if the Gordon girls wouldn't cross it" when it was high.
Oops! Per my notes: Nettie was born in 1873 and died in 1942. She is buried in Section 6, Lot 3. Her grave marker shows these dates. The marker is unique - looks like a tootsie rool (in shape) on top of small post or platform.
[Per my notes: Nettie's mother was Elizabeth Shelton Gordon, born 1834 in Illinois.]
Re: Story Nettie and Hattie daring to cross rain swollen river when even men wouldn't - They crossed the SALT River (not creek at Gordon Canyon), near Young on or near "old" road.
