Dear Jackie:
While in Lancaster County, Virginia, I looked up HUNTER in the guardianship records re Elizabeth Hunter married to Major John Singleton.
Well-----they were all mixed in with wills and adm. records. There were none for Hunter that I could find.
The only things I found that MIGHT be of interest is a Jesse WILDER was appointed guardian to Elizabeth Sara Hunton (Hunter), orphans of Samuel Mary, decd. in room (?) of Henry Lawson, their former guardian.
If you think the spelling for either your original information, or the above record could be mistake, then perhpas you can check on BK 22, Wills and Adm.
There were also HINTON’s in the records.
And you also know of the Jesse WILDER down in Sumter, SC. Would like to know more about him, if you have anything.
And, really, anything about any of the Wilders in Lancaster (Virginia) and SC.. After I found out Mr. Murtha WIlder wasn’t as accurate as we would like, I am trying to compile what I can on my folks to see just where they do fit in.
Keep me posted, please. This is an interesting story behind your Elizabeth. Can you imagine being married at 14?

Notes - Info received 5 April 1998. Southern Baptist Newspaper, Charleston, South Carolina: Issue of January 10, 1849. Died, on the morning of the 23d inst., at her residence near Sumterville, South Carolina, Mrs. Elizabeth Singleton, widow of Major John Singleton, in the 78th year of her age. Mrs. S. whose maiden name was Hunter, was a native of Virginia, from which State, while very young she came as an orphan with her guardian to South Carolina, where some years after she was married... (long account and eulogy). The above obit was copied from a 1981 publication by Brent H. Holcomb titled “Marriage and Death Notices from Baptist Newspapers of South Carolina 1835-1865. Question: Is this the same person referred as Elizabeth Wilder Singleton? Do we know any of the children of this marriage? If there was a child named John, do we know his children? The rest of the obituary reads “When about 33 years of age, she became a member of the Baptist Church, in which communion she continued through life to illustrate the doctrines of the great Head of the church, by her Godly spirit and example. In 1824, by the death of her hasband, she was left to discharge the duties of a surviving parent to a numerous family of whom but four now live to attest how well and faithfully those duties have been performed. Living to an advanced old age it was her lot in life to endure many spirit-trying dispensations of an all-wise Providence, and she never reveried to them without uttering words of praise for the grace which had not failed to sustain her, and upon which she relied as suffient to prepare her for all future events. Her trust was not vain; she continued to the close of life in the active and cheerful discharge of maternal and christian duty--her sense of which, and her naturally benevolent spirit prompting her to the most active exertions in relieving the sick, or in soothing the afflictions of the distressed. The prominent feature of her character was that of the PEACE-MAKER. The least sign of coldness, or of an approaching breach between friends became to her a subject of anxious concern and the spirit of discord rarely failed to yield to the benigh influence of that christian love which prompted and directed all her efforts to promote peace and goodwill around her. The hope of an immortal crown grew brighter as her last hour approached, and the faith that death would be to her spirit but the gate of that heavenly city where the saints in glory dwell, was fully triumphant; yet, while her spirt doubtless longed to depart and be with Christ, she presumed not to choose the hour of departure, but awaited his call in patience, and all that she said in those around her breathed the spirit of the Apostle’s assurance--”for me, to live is Christ, to die is gain.”-- Some days before she breathed her last, she gave thanks for the prospect of Heaven, in the words--”Bless the Lord, Oh my soul, and all that is within me bless his holy name. After that she repeated some verses of a funeral hymn, and her peaceful spirit continued apparently praising God, when too feeble to be heard in accents of praise-- “Let the world bewail their dead/Findly of their loss complain-/Sister, friend, by Jesus freed,/Death to thee, to us, is gain.” J.
