Shadae Spann, 20, of Sumter and her 2000 Mercedes E320 were found hidden under heavy brush off of U.S. Highway 601 near Lone Star Road, according to Calhoun County Coroner Donnie Porth. “It was in brush but in 24 years I have never seen one disguised so good,” Porth said. The vehicle could not have been spotted by someone standing on the side of the road, he said. The search for Spann started after her family contacted Sumter County authorities, Porth said. The search also included Richland County. Around 10:30 a.m. Friday, officers saw a skid mark on the side of U.S. 601. They stopped and investigated the area, finding Spann. Porth said an autopsy has not been conducted, but it appears Spann died of multiple blunt force trauma on Sept. 24. He said there were no indications of foul play. Spann was a student at Claflin University, Porth said. S.C. Highway Patrol Lance Corporal Tyler Tidwell said the accident occurred at about 11:21 p.m. on Sept. 24. “The Mercedes E320 was traveling south on U.S. 601 and the vehicle crossed the center line and ran off the road to the left and struck several trees,” Tidwell said. “The driver of the vehicle was then ejected and the vehicle overturned and landed on top of the driver.” Tidwell said the driver was not wearing a seatbelt. It happened September 24 on U.S. Highway 601 near Lone Star Road in Calhoun County, according to the release, but Spann's body was found Friday. “Claflin University mourns the loss of a student with outstanding potential," said President Dwaun J. According to South Carolina Highway Patrol Lance Cpl. Tyler Tidwell, Shadae Spann’s remains were found under her overturned 2000 Mercedes E320 that was buried heavily in brush on Friday morning. Law enforcement believe the single-vehicle wreck occurred at about 11:21 p.m. near Lone Star Road on Sept. 24. Spann was traveling south on U.S. 601 when her vehicle crossed the center line and ran off the road to the left and stuck several trees, Tidwell said. Spann was ejected from the vehicle before it overturned and landed on top of her. Law enforcement agencies were able to identify Spann’s location through her cellphone records, Calhoun County Coroner Donnie Porth said. The last cell tower her phone hit was a half-mile from where they found her vehicle. Officers then found skid marks on U.S. 601 that led to her vehicle, which was not visible from the road due to heavy vegetation. “I thought the towing company had already towed the vehicle because I asked, ‘Where is the vehicle?’ And they said it’s right there,” Porth said. “Even looking in there, I couldn’t see it. It was very well hid.” Spann was the only occupant and was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the wreck. The South Carolina Highway patrol is investigating the wreck. Spann was a junior at Claflin University. She graduated from Sumter High School in 2018, according to Shelly Galloway, spokeswoman for Sumter School District. Todd Touchberry, manager of Cut Rate Drug Store and Soda Fountain, said Spann was a former employee who was hardworking and kind. “Excellent employee, excellent soul,” Touchberry said. He said it was a sad moment when he and his staff found out about the news. “She was just very sweet. A genuinely, sweet and humble person,” said Allison McElveen, Spann’s coworker at Cut Rate. “She could not get mad at all. She was always smiling and happy.” McElveen was surprised Spann died at the age of 20. “I didn’t even know she was that young. It’s just so very sad,” McElveen said. “She made work go by easier. She departed this life on Thursday, Sept. 24, 2020. Shadae accepted Christ at the age of 12 and joined Bible Way Church of Atlas Road in Columbia under the leadership of Pastor Darrell Jackson Sr. Shadae was a multi-talented individual. She played the piano, violin, soccer, softball and basketball. Shadae excelled at everything she put her mind to do. She was educated in the public schools of Sumter County. She graduated with a 4.3 GPA from Sumter High School. Shadae pursued her degree in biology at Claflin University. She was a junior with a 3.8 GPA in the honors program. Shadae planned to further her education in dentistry and become an orthodontist. Shadae leaves to cherish precious memories: her parents, Craig and Hope Spann; two brothers, Jean Claude Spann and Takoda Spann; grandmother, Annie Mae Johnson; and a host of uncles, aunts and cousins. Shadae was preceded in death by her grandparents, Deacon Harold and Deaconess Azalee Johnson of Conway, who adored and loved her wholeheartedly. There will be a family and friends walk-thru from 5 to 7 p.m. on Thursday at Job's Mortuary Inc. Graveside services will be held at noon on Friday at Evergreen Memorial Park, 803 N. Guignard Drive, Sumter, SC 29150 with Pastor Darrell Jackson Sr., eulogist, and Assistant Pastor Randall Jackson officiating.
