"It has been a privilege to have served on the Paxville Town Council under Mayor McLeod," said Diane Chappell, Paxville mayor pro tem. "He always listened to what the citizens' concerns were and worked diligently to get them resolved. Wade was not only the mayor, but a great friend. He never met a stranger and was kind to everyone. He leaves behind a great legacy and some big shoes to fill." McLeod began his tenure as Paxville's mayor when he was elected unopposed on Dec. 14, 2010, as the town's first four-term mayor. McLeod said that his election wasn't assured. "You have a few people write in Mickey Mouse in a small town, and that's it," McLeod joked after the election. "Mayor Wade McLeod was a true public servant and served the Town of Paxville with passion and desired to improve his town in every way," said Manning Mayor Julia A. Nelson. "His leadership within Clarendon County will be missed." Jamie Corbett was Paxville's mayor for six-and-a-half years before McLeod was elected to the position in 2010. "Mr. Wade did a great job as mayor of Paxville," Corbett said. "Everyone respected him." Corbett said he and McLeod's son were good friends and that he spent a lot of time in the McLeod household. "Mr. Wade cared about the people in Paxville," Corbett said. "He was also the Paxville historian. He knew all the history of the area." Corbett said that while he was mayor and during McLeod's tenure in the position that the two friends would get together and talk about anything and everything. "I respected his opinion," Corbett added. "Everyone did. We talked about what was happening now in Paxville and what his plans were for the future of the town." McLeod's faith was devout. "The Lord is looking out for us here in Paxville," McLeod said when the Paxville Community Development Corp. received a sizeable donation toward the corporation's pantry fund in 2013. In 2013, Manning put plans into operation to extend its water system to Paxville. "This is truly the Crossroads of Clarendon County," McLeod said after the ceremony announcing the venture. For years, McLeod also served as the town's postmaster. He was a member of St. Peter's Lodge #54 AFM in Manning for more than 45 years. He was also a member of the South Carolina Municipal Association and Paxville Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon, Sunday school teacher and trustee. McLeod was the third generation in his family to own and operate McLeod's Grocery at the corner of Lewis Road and U.S. 15. "Mr. Wade was a fine Southern gentleman and someone we looked up to immensely," said Cody Simpson, special assistant at the office of South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster who also works in the family's farming business near Paxville. "Paxville Mayor L. Wade McLeod had a servant's heart. He loved the community, and the community loved him. He paid it forward in more ways than anyone will ever know." Simpson said those who were fortunate enough to know Mayor McLeod were inspired by his unwavering dedication to his faith, family, community and state. "Mayor McLeod will be dearly missed by all who knew him," Simpson said. "To Mrs. Libby McLeod and the entire McLeod family, please know that you are in our prayers and that Mayor McLeod's legacy of faithfulness and kindness will always be remembered." A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 24, at the Paxville Baptist Church Cemetery with the Revs. Jim Johnson and Bennie Barwick officiating. Memorials may be made to the Paxville Baptist Church Building Fund, 10278 Lewis Road, Manning SC 29102. [1, 2, 3, 4] | |
