The Sumter county coroner says Ebony Canty was beaten and strangled to death at the downtown Sumter Motor Inn. Police found her body early Tuesday morning. 44 year old Freddie Curtis is charged with murder. A judge denied him bond Wednesday afternoon. “Regardless if it is a life sentence or a death sentence, I hope he will never see the light of day again, says Ebony's daughter Ashanti Canty. The family says the suspect and Ebony had a turbulent relationship. The judge mentioned that Freddie Curtis was out on a parole at the time of ebony's death and also has a long criminal history. Loved ones say they're haunted by those memories. “In those two years I’ve seen what he’s done and I saw my mom come back home crying. And it’s sad that I couldn’t do anything about it, because I had to stay in a child’s place," says Ashanti. Ebony leaves behind three children, Ashanti, sey-quan and key-wan. Relatives say more should have been done to protect the family. “If you’ve got a track record, somebody should have done something. They should not have let him out. He was on probation already," says Cynthis Montgomery-Smith, Ebony's aunt. “He’d call my mom a Queen but didn’t treat her like one," says Ashanti. The family says Ebony would turned 36 on Sunday and shortly before she died, she had her nails done before the birthday celebration. Instead, she's set to be buried when her funeral takes place Saturday morning. Woman killed in domestic violence incident at downtown Sumter motel Posted Tuesday, January 28, 2020 12:39 pm BY KAYLA GREEN kayla@theitem.com A woman was found dead in the early Tuesday morning hours at the Downtown Sumter Motor Inn from what police are saying was a domestic violence incident. Ebony Elizabeth Canty, 35, of Blanche Road, had “visible injuries to her upper body” when officers arrived about 1:20 a.m. to the motel at 409 N. Main St., which is just outside downtown at the intersection of North Main and Loring Drive/Warren Street. The 44-year-old man with whom she had a relationship was at the scene and taken into custody, according to Tonyia McGirt, public information officer for the Sumter Police Department. Freddie Ladale Curtis, of Hickory Road, is being held at the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office Detention Center as the investigation continues. He faces a murder charge in Canty’s death. McGirt said the Sumter County Coroner’s Office has notified Canty’s family and scheduled an autopsy for Wednesday in Charleston. More information will be posted as it becomes available. This is the third homicide in Sumter to occur in this first month of the year. County deputies found the body of a 23-year-old man off McCrays Mill Road on Jan. 1, and an autopsy showed he died from a gunshot wound. Deputies found him during a property check after seeing his vehicle parked in the area. A 20-year-old man from Sumter was arrested in Richland County on Monday and charged with murder in the case. His bond hearing was Tuesday morning. The second killing came on Jan. 20, when a 17-year-old was found dead in front of an abandoned house on Wilder Street.
