| HIST | HUGH MOSS SHERER JR. Posted Tuesday, March 1, 2022 6:00 am Hugh Moss Sherer Jr., 90, died on Saturday, Feb. 26, 2022, at Covenant Place. Born on July 11, 1931, in Mobile, Alabama, he was a son of the late Hugh Moss Sherer and Lois Cowden Sherer. He was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Willene Mansell Sherer. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean War and served as a corpsman with the 1st Marine Division. He was a graduate of Walker County High School in Jasper, Alabama, received his undergraduate degree from the University of Alabama and a master's degree from Florida State University. He began his career with the Alabama Department of Public Health and spent most of his career with the S.C. Department of Mental Health. He lived most of his adult life in Columbia and was a member of Saint Michael and All Angels' Episcopal Church. He also lived in Mount Pleasant and Sumter. He was a former member of Saint Michael's Church in Charleston and Church of the Holy Cross in Sullivan's Island. Survivors include two children, Hugh Duncan Sherer and Lisa Sherer Avins (Richard); and three beloved grandchildren, Nora Anne Avins, Catherine Landon Sherer and William Duncan Sherer. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday in the Saint Michael and All Angels' Episcopal Church cemetery.
