| HIST | Official Obituary of Teresa Lyons Hancock July 17, 1948 - August 23, 2024 Teresa Lyons Hancock Obituary & Events Teresa Lyons Hancock Obituary Teresa Lyons Hancock, 76, of Jefferson, NC passed away Friday, August 23, 2024 at home while surrounded by her loving family. Born in Ashland, Kentucky on July 17, 1948 to Joseph and June (Freeman) Lyons, Teresa graduated from both Pikeville High School and Pikeville College. She earned a Master’s degree while balancing work and the responsibilities that go with being a military spouse. Teresa touched the lives of numerous children as both a teacher and administrator for over 35 years. After retiring to Jefferson, NC, Teresa became involved in many aspects of local life. She was an active member at Jefferson United Methodist Church where she chaired the worship design team. She was also able to continue her love of singing and music through her participation in the choir and the hand bell choir. Much of Teresa’s time was spent playing board games and swapping stories over lunch with a close knit group of friends. Perhaps her greatest discovery after moving to Jefferson was the deep and lasting friendships she made with her neighbors. They, and everyone who knew her, were able to enjoy Teresa’s dry sense of humor and quick wit while developing a bond that was seen in full force as Teresa’s health declined. This strong bond was evident by the numerous calls, visits, and tears shed. When Teresa wasn’t enjoying retirement in Jefferson, she could be found spending time with her family in Pennsylvania. A devoted grandmother, Teresa spent many chilly days watching her grandchildren play tennis and football. She was also known to wake up early to watch swim meets or any other event she was invited to. Teresa was predeceased by her husband of 49 years, John William Hancock. Teresa is survived by a daughter, Anne Marie (Justin) Horn, a son, Brian (Corrine) Hancock, grandsons, Jacob and Ethan Horn and Layton and Preston Hancock, and sisters Carolyn Hall and Cynthia Peffers. Visitation will be from 5:00 - 6:00 on September 6, 2024 at Boone Family Funeral Home in Jefferson, NC. A funeral service will be held at Jefferson United Methodist Church beginning at 11:00 on September 7. Burial will be at Arlington National Cemetery at a date and time to be determined. In lieu of flowers, Teresa requested donations be made to Jefferson United Methodist Church, PO Box 236, Jefferson, NC 28640. Please specify food pantry or Christmas child in the memo line.
