HIST | In 1855, John Hart’s carriage factory, which was his main business venture, failed. Caleb Coker II, of Society Hill, SC, bought the factory, along with Hart’s other holdings. The purchase was an endowment for Coker’s son, James Lide Coker. James Lide Coker moved to Hartsville in 1857 to farm the land using scientific farming methods learned from his Harvard education. His plans were interrupted by the Civil War. He returned to his farm after the war to find it in disarray. Major James Lide Coker was severely injured in the war, but being a courageous and ambitious man, he worked to restore Hartsville to its prewar state of prosperity. See Caleb’s son, Major James Lide Coker, for the rest of the story. [6] | |
