SINGLETON Mortimer Richard Singleton, 95, widower of Hattie Owens Singleton, passed away to Jesus at his Columbia home on Saturday, June 26, 2010. Born in Sumter, he was a son of the late Bradford and Lillie James Singleton. Mr. Singleton was a longtime member of Grace Baptist Church. He served in the Army-Air Corps during World War II. His credits include employment with the Sumter Police Department, detective for Atlantic Coastline Railroad, Tropic Aire Screen Co. and Singleton Seafood Market. He loved his family, his garden, fishing, golf and his dog, Lady. The oldest known member of the Singleton family of Sumter and known by all as "Mort" and "Big Daddy," he is survived by his son, Ken and wife, Bette; son, Roger "Duke" Sr. and wife, Judy; daughter, Sandy "Scoot" Fender and husband, Ed; grandchildren, Michael Singleton and wife, Robin, Lori Singleton, Julie Underwood and husband, Randy, Roger Singleton Jr. and wife, Mary Beth, Chris Singleton and wife, Ashley, Winston Jewell Jr. and wife, Phyllis, Cayce Jewell, Angie Morningstar and husband, Mark, Felicia Jewell, A.J. Jewell, and Kandy Stamps and husband, David; great-grandchildren, Matthew, Chelsea, Taylor, Dallas and Anna Grace Singleton; Darcy, Todd and Carrie Sherer; Haley Jewell; Marcus, Kody and Jackie Morningstar; Jakob Fricke; Brianna and Daniel Stamps; and great-great-granddaughter, Madelyn Giles. He is also survived by a number of nieces, nephews, cousins, and an abundance of friends. He was preceded in death by his sister, Bonnie; and his brother, Willie B. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the Chapel of Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home with Dr. Jim Chandler and the Rev. Don Davis officiating. Burial will be in Sumter Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Michael Singleton, Roger Singleton Jr., Chris Singleton, Winston Jewell Jr., Cayce Jewell and A.J. Jewell. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home.
