  Carl had an offer to move to Minnesota with his brothers and sisters but he stayed to finish a job on a farm to honor a commitment. He met his wife Becky. His mother did not approve of that union so they did not have a formal marriage. After thier marriage they went to work on a farm south of Fremont. Later Carl went to work for Frank Conrad, and later worked with Frank’s son Francis. As part of his compensation he stayed on a farmstead provided by the Conrads. After a second chimney fire (the house was heated using a wood burning furnace) the house was declared uninhabitable without replacing the chimney. Francis would not replace the chimney so Carl and Becky found a place in Fremont. When Francis also would not raise Carl’s pay to replace the housing, Carl took a job as a janitor at Fremont Junior High School. The first year that he worked there his youngest son Phil also attended the school. Phil can attest that Carl was very much respected by the administration, teachers and especially the students. He had worked in the Junior High Building for seven years when he was moved to the Central Office (Cob Shed) Building as the assistance building and grounds supervisor. He was offered the position in charge of buildings and grounds but declined as he was nearing retirement. He was a member of the Nebraska State Custodial Association and served as its secretary/treasurer for several years. He was inducted into the Nebraska State Custodial Association Hall of Fame in June 1992. After his marriage, he lived on a farm south of Fremont in Saunders County where he farmed until moving into Fremont in 1965. He then was custodian for nine years at Fremont Junior High School and then for seven years at the Fremont Public Schools Central Offices and was assistant building and grounds supervisor. He was a member of the Nebraska State Custodians Association and served as its secretary/treasurer for several years. He was inducted into the Nebraska State Custodians Association Hall of Fame in June 1992. [9, 14]
